The best city in each state for single women in 2019

The best city in each state for single women in 2019The best city in each state for single women in 2019Are you a single woman whos tired of going on terrible dates?Would you rather sit at home in your pajamas and watch another episode of The Handmaid Tale rather than go out to a bar and meet some random guy wholl talk about himself the entire time, without asking a single thing about you?Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraHave you swiped left on what seems like an endless onslaught of awful men that the online dating app you use thinks you might be interested in?Or maybe you happily single but wish there were other single people to hang out with, do cool stuff like bar-hopping andfarmers market trips with?If you answered yes to one or mora of the above question, then this list is for you. Here are the top 10 cities in AmericaMinneapolis, MNCollege Park, MDSomerville, MATempe, AZCle mson, SCRochester, NYYpsilanti, MIConshohocken, PABoone, NCMadison, WIThese cities, some admittedly I have never heard of, are the most promising if you are looking for some love in your life. They are cool places even if you are looking to go out and meet new people and have a nice time.Maybe its time to move to a city where there are other women like you, who are also looking for the same things you are.Summary of our findingsMinneapolis is the best city for single womenA huge number of cities on our best for single women list are college townsHawaiiis the worst state for single women, andAlaskais also pretty badThe South is generally badHow we determined these rankingsWe considered a lot of criteria for this one in order to get the best, most complete results possible. Using the 2013-2017 American Community Survey Census data, we looked at every single city in the nation with a minimum population of 5,000. We paid particular attention toPopulation density% of population thats mal e vs. female (closerto a 50-50 ratio is better)Median ageNumber of unmarried people in each cityBars per capitaFarmers markets per capitaWe predicted that a combination of demographics with the numbers per capita of cool places such as bars and farmers markets to hang out and meet people would give us the most comprehensive list of cities.Want to know more about each of these ten cities? Here it goes1. MINNEAPOLIS, MNNot only is Minneapolis the largest city by population on our top 10 list, it is also the city with the highest median age of 32, which is indicative of the major metropolis that it is.What is also great is that only 30% of the households are married households, and the population is pretty equally divided between male and female. There are also a huge number of bars and farmers market if you are looking for places to go and meet other single people.2. COLLEGE PARK, MDCollege Park is second on our list, and thats partly because it is a student town, with a median age that s slightly under 22.There are also 53 men to every 47 women, so if you are looking for a bigger pool of men, College Park could be the city for you.It also has no shortage of bars. With a total of 25 bars for a relatively small city of 32,000 people, it has the second most number of bars per capita on our top ten list.3. SOMERVILLE, MAThe City of Somerville is another college town, and there are a few reasons to move here, if you are a single woman.Somerville is very evenly divided into male and female, and only 30 percent of the households are registered as married households. It is also very densely populated, which makes it highly walkable and bikeable.4. TEMPE, AZTempe, AZ is home to Arizona State University, and it is a mid-size city, which is considered a suburb of Phoenix. Not only are there a ton of outdoor activities to choose, Tempe also has a good number of bars and single people to go to the said bars with. Also, listen up single ladies wanting to mingle with single lads, t here are more lads then us ladies in this city.5. CLEMSON, SCAnother college town makes it to the top ten, and this time its Clemson, SC, home to the Clemson Tigers.Clemsons median age is around 24, and about 48% of the population is female.Consider that alongside the second most bars per capita on our top ten list and only 30 percent married households, and it is not hard to imagine why this city of 150,000 people is number five on our list of best cities for single women.6. ROCHESTER, NYRochester is the third largest city on our top ten list with a population of 210,000 people. The median age is 31, and there are more women than men in this upstate NY city.So if you are happy being single and fabulous, then Rochester could be the city where you make new single girlfriends and explore what this very diverse city has to offer.7. YPSILANTI, MIYpsilanti is a pretty small city of about 20,000 people, and I personally think single women should move here because the Ypsilanti Water Tower holds the unique distinction of being the winner of the Most Phallic Building Contest. Locals call this tower, the brick dick. Seriously, Im not kidding. If that doesnt get you to move, then perhaps the fact that only 20 percent of households are registered as married households may sway you.8. CONSHOHOCKEN, PAConshohocken is the smallest city in terms of population on our top ten list with less than 8000 people. However, it is a riverfront suburb of Philadelphia, so if you want to get away from the chaos of big city, but still be in a city where you are not surrounded by mostly married couples preoccupied with kids and family responsibilities, Conshohocken could be the city for you.9. BOONE, NCThe mountain city of Boone in North Carolina is easily one of the prettiest cities on our top ten list.Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Western NC, Boone is home to Appalachian State University, which explains its median age of 21.Only around 15 percent of the households in Boone are regi stered as married, and with a ton of outdoor activities to choose from, Boone is a great place for adventurous single women.10. MADISON, WIThe second largest city in terms of population, Madison is on this list for a lot of different reasons.First off, the male to female ratio is 1-to-1, and the median age is 31.Madison has been consistently ranked one of the best cities in America in a number of categories, and it is not a surprise that it is a great city for single women. There are plenty of options when it comes to bars, livemusicvenues, farmers markets, and outdoor activities to suit most womens needs.WRAPPING UPSo there you have it. If you are a single woman looking to move to a more exciting city, we hope you can find your perfect match.Go out there and have a great time in the city of your dreams. And If moving cross country is not your cup of tea, then check out which city in your state is best for single ladies. How Working Parents Can Balance Work and Life

How Working Parents Can Balance Work and LifeHow Working Parents Can Balance Work and LifePicture the scene Youre at your desk, scrambling to wrap up a critical presentation when your cell phone rings. You plan to ignore it as youre racing to meet your deadline, but your heart sinks as you glance at the screen. Its your childs school. Your kid is either sick or in big trouble. Either way, you are urgently needed, and the rest of your workday hangs in the balance.Ive been there, and while I wouldnt swap being a parent for anything, figuring out how to balance work and family commitments is tough. Across America, millions of working parents pursue their careers while raising a family. In 2016, mora than 34 million families in the U.S. included children under age 18. And according to a recent study by EY, three-quarters of full-time working parents felt having a child impacted their work situation. For many of us, the fine art of managing work-life balance presents an ongoing and stressf ul challenge. The challenge becomes greater if your work schedule doesnt fall into a conventional 9-5, Monday to Friday pattern. Even jobs with so-called bankers hours sometimes involve longer days, varying schedules and rapidly changing deadlines that sometimes make family plans go out the window. It may seem insurmountable at times, but a few simple steps can help ease the physical and mental load. Here are some strategies Ive learned and adopted to strike a more harmonious work-life balance.Put some slack in your scheduleSimply put, there are always components to your work schedule that you just cant control. What you can control though, is how you allocate your time across your entire schedule, not just your workday. Working long hours, not getting enough sleep and maintaining a constantly action-packed calendar leaves you stressed in the short term and burned out in the long run. There are only 24 hours in the day - and some of those hours must be devoted to sleep and self-care .I learned the hard way that a schedule packed with personal and professional commitments didnt leave me feeling accomplished. It made me feel tense and drained. Its essential to set boundaries, find time to relax and do something you enjoy. That may seem impossible at first, but try it. Even if infrequent, it makes a world of difference and provides some sanctuary to recharge in the middle of the chaos.SEARCH OUR JOB OPENINGSManage expectationsThis one can be hard, but its critical. As working parents, figuring out how to deal with conflicting needs and requests can leave you wracked with guilt. Your kid wants you to watch their soccer game thats at the exact same time as a critical gruppe meeting. Your boss asks you to attend an industry event that clashes with a family gathering. Your client wants you to fly across the country for a presentation when you dont have a babysitter. For working parents, these scenarios seem to occur often - and are always painful.Finding solutions fo r not being able to be in two places at once can seem impossible. And if youre worried that youve made your boss or family happy at the expense of the other, its time to remember the most important person to your career and your well-being you. Managing your own expectations is just as important as taking care of everyone elses needs. None of us can ever be the perfect parent or the perfect professional 100 percent of the time, so be kind to yourself along the way.Prioritize and delegateSome of us are better at this than others. In my own experience, I found out fast that I could never get through my daily to-do list. It welches beyond frustrating. I kept thinking I was failing until I finally realized I had way too many things on my list to begin with. I was ultimately setting myself up for failure. Now I practice better time management. I still write out my list of things to do at the start of the week. But instead of working through all of them, I prioritize everything thats extre mely important and figure out what can wait and what isnt essential. I delegate anything that doesnt require my direct input but still needs to get done. I try to work smarter and focus on what matters versus spreading myself too thin and taking on way too much.Maintain perspectiveIve noticed that many working parents are fast and efficient, and its the same with me. When Im working, theres no time to procrastinate. I get things done quicker than I ever did before because I dont have the luxury of leaving work deadlines until the very last minute.Despite this, I admit that I sometimes feel frustrated by what I havent achieved in a busy workday or when certain career goals feel out of reach. But I keep plugging away. Its a wonderful thing to want to keep progressing, but if youre feeling demoralized, try and maintain a healthy perspective.Working parents are pulled in a million directions daily. If you are delivering at work and being present for your family, you already are succeedi ng.Octavia Goredema is the founder and editor of Twenty Ten Talent, a career resource for talented young black women. Selling to Small Businesses

Selling to Small BusinessesSelling to Small BusinessesFor certain products and services, the sweet spot prospect is small businesses. That kind of B2B sales requires a very different approach from selling to big corporations or, for that matter, from selling to consumers. Small businesses have their needs and limitations, and if you can identify and address these, you can have considerable success with this market. What Is a Small Business? The Small Business Administration (SBA) defines a small business as one that is for-profit, privately owned, and not dominant in its field. Small businesses generally have revenues under $20 million a year and employ fewer than 500 employees (sometimes much fewer). Businesses of this size usually dont have the need or the funds to keep a purchasing expert on staff. So if you sell to small businesses and your product is something more expensive than office supplies, odds are youll be selling to the business owner or owners. The good news is tha t selling to small businesses generally means a shorter sales cycle as opposed to large business customers because you wont have to go through a long and involved approval process. In fact, you have a good chance of closing the sale at the first meeting. When youre dealing directly with the business owner, he doesnt exactly have to wait for approval from upstairs. The Decision Maker Before you meet with the decision maker, do some research and uncover at least the basics about his company. Just looking at your prospects website will usually tell you who the owners are, how long theyve been in business, whether the current owners founded the company or bought it from someone else, what their major successes have been, and so on. Some companies even list their significant customers, which can be hugely useful for your sales presentation. If you mention during your appointment how useful your product would be in future sales to Company X and back it up with an example or two, your prospect will be highly impressed. Small business owners are well aware of the dismal statistics surrounding the failure rate of small businesses. No matter how successful they are individually, they know that there is no safety net and that one really bad year can wipe them out. As a result, presenting your product as a way to increase the business owners peace of mind is often an effective approach. Saving money is also a highly useful benefit since many small businesses have very little margin for error financially. These owners are generally looking to advance their business in one of two ways to grow it until its a major player in the industry, or to attract a bigger company that will buy their company. Early on in the presentation, find out which way your prospect is leaning, and then position your product as a tool to help him achieve that end. For example, if you are selling accounting software, the ability to quickly produce reports going back several years would be very he lpful during a company sale or merger. Such reports would also help a growing company identify areas of strength or weakness and guide the business owners strategic planning. The beauty of tying your product or service into his long-term goals is that it will make him much less likely to switch providers later on. You are making yourself and your company, a strategic partner, to help him get his company where he wants it to go. As a result, youre armoring him against your competitors wiles.

Make something different out of yourself every 3 years

Make something different out of yourself every 3 yearsMake something different out of yourself every 3 yearsWhen I was finishing grad school by the end of 2010, like everyone that leaves school, I had to build a career.Instead of getting a management traineeship, like most of my fellow business administration students did, I started a business. That forced me to totally reinvent myself. As an employee or student, youre used to people telling you what to do. But as an entrepreneur, youre the one who gives the ordersandexecutes them.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreEvery year, I kept improving myself and acquiring new skills, one after the other.I learned how to build a website, write copy, and everything else you need to know to run your own business. But after three years, I hit a ceiling. I never worked for a major company and I felt I needed that experience to become a better lea der so I could grow my company. So I reinvented myself again. I got a job at a major IT research firm in London. I developed sales, persuasion, communication, and leadership skills. But this time, it took two years before I reinvented myselfagain. In 2015, I went back to full-time entrepreneurship. But I also became a blogger. The skills I acquired until then proved to be very useful. But I also had to acquirenewskills Article writing, storytelling, illustrating, and schmelzglas marketing. That was reinvention number three. And now, nine years after my first reinvention, Im making something different out of myselfagain. This year Im focusing more on video, which is a whole different beast (heres my YouTube channel).Im elend only working on improving my speaking skills, but Im also learning all the technical things about recording video (which is A LOT).Knowledge has an expiry dateWhy am I giving you my background? I was recently readingThe Daily Drucker, which is a collection of quotes by Peter Drucker, one of the most respected management consultants of our time. In the book, I read the followingA knowledge worker becomes obsolescent if he or she does not go back to school every three or four years.I realized why I reinvented myself every few years its because we risk becoming useless. I know that sounds harsh. But in the past two decades, business has changed so fast that we need to improve our knowledgeall the timeso we can keep up.The time when a person acquired knowledge and could rely on it for the rest of their career is over. Your diplomas and qualifications have an expiry date. Most knowledge becomes useless at some point. We should constantly acquire new knowledgeandskills, as Drucker says. He continuesIn todays society and organizations, people work increasingly with knowledge, rather than with skill. Knowledge and skill differ in a fundamental characteristic- skills change very, very slowly. Knowledge, however, changes itself. It makes itself obsolete, and very rapidly.Skills vs knowledgeWe all make the mistake of overemphasizing the importance of knowledge.According to Drucker, knowledge is information and theory. For example, you could have had a lot of knowledge about corded telephones in the past. But since that industry is almost gone, that knowledge is useless. So you needed two things to survive in the telecommunications industry New knowledge aboutmobilephones and solid skills like engineering or programming. The skills change slowly. But the knowledge changes quickly. Thats the difference. As I have written before, knowledge workers increase their odds of success by acquiring more skills.I call that concept Skill Stacking. But thats not the only thing one should do to becomeandstay successful. We must take responsibility for our own development. We must adapt to change. Practically speaking, it means we must reinvent ourselves every three to four years. What steps should you take now?Look, you have a long career ahead of you. Especially if youre in your twenties or thirties. Think about what skills and new knowledge youve acquired in the past three years. If you dont have an answer, its time to make a change. Drucker saysIf you talk of fifty years of working life- and this, I think, is going to be increasingly the norm- you have to reinvent yourself. You have to make something different out of yourself, rather than just find a new supply of energy.Life is long. And so are our careers The age you retire will only increase over the years. Do you really want to become obsolete decades before you retire? We all know what it feels like to stagnate. Nobody feels better by being in a dead-end career. Look ahead of you and ask yourself What steps should I takenowto stay a relevant professional?Acquire new skills.I think universalskills like writing, persuasion, and personal effectiveness will always be useful. When you acquire those types of skills, you will automatically increase your odds of success. I talk abo ut Skill Stacking in this video.Get better every day. And every three to four years, make a BIG change. Go in a different direction. Make something different out of yourself. Its not only better for your career its also excitingThis article originally appeared on Darius Foroux. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

I wouldnt have seen it if I hadnt believed it No one is above self-delusion

I wouldnt have seen it if I hadnt believed it No one is above self-delusionI wouldnt have seen it if I hadnt believed it No one is above self-delusionNo one is above self-delusion.This thought kept buzzing in my head as I was doing research related to a book Im currently writing. Brilliant scientists- on a regular basis- fool themselves. We tend to think that were above cognitive biases and subjective distortion. The Im not biased bias is a real thing. Studies show that people regularly rate themselves as less biased than the average American. These studies remind me of how President Dwight Eisenhower was astonished to learn that half the U.S. population had below-average intelligence. But scientists should be in a different category. After all, theyre trained in the scientific method designed to counter human biases and help separate fact from fiction. Yet, scientists arent immune from seeing what they want to see- even when its not there.Consider unterstellung examples, all of which are about roter planet. In the late 1800s, the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli spotted what he called canali on the Martian surface. These canali- not to be confused with the delicious Sicilian dessert cannoli- were long, canal-like structures.Although Schiaparelli didnt attribute these canals to intelligent life, the astronomer Percival Lowell later took that leap. Lowell wrote that the canals were built by an ancient intelligent civilization in order to access water from Marss polar ice caps. Lowells speculations fueled the publics already voracious appetite for alien stories, providing fodder for numerous media stories and science-fiction books like Ray Bradburys Martian Chronicles. But the canals turned out to be optical illusions.Mars also led Nikola Tesla, the inventor of the AC motor, astray. Tesla reported detecting signals from Mars consisting of a regular repetition of numbers, much like how Jodie Fosters character in Contact detected prime numbers from Vega. Tesla interpreted these numbers as extraordinary experimental evidence of intelligent life on Mars.More recently, scientists at Stanford University picked up a signal from the Mars Polar Lander after the spacecraft was thought to have crashed on the planets surface. To verify the signals origins, they told the spacecraft to send smoke signals by turning its radio on and off in a distinctive sequence. The spacecraft appeared to oblige. The scientists received the smoke signal and announced, much like Dr. Frankenstein, that the spacecraft was alive. But it was not. The signal turned out to be a fluke. The Stanford scientists were experiencing a phenomenon known as I wouldnt have seen it if I hadnt believed it. They wanted the Mars Polar Lander to be alive so badly they saw what they wanted to see.None of these scientists were intentionally trying to mislead the public. Their conclusions were based on their interpretation of seemingly objective data. So how did these brilliant people see somet hing when there was nothing? We tend to assume theres a negative relationship between intelligence and cognitive bias. In other words, we believe that the more intelligent you are- the more advanced your operating system is- the less likely you are to fall victim to the type of fallacies that affect the rest of the public. But the opposite is true. As Tali Sharot explains in The Influential Mind summarizing the relevant research, the greater your cognitive capacity, the greater your ability to rationalize and interpret information at will, and to creatively twist data to fit your opinions. So if you think youre immune to fooling yourself, think again. No one comes equipped with a critical-thinking integrierte schaltung that diminishes the human tendency to let personal beliefs distort the facts. Regardless of your IQ or intellectual capabilities, physicist Richard Feynmans adage holds true The first principle is that you must not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool.Oza n Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author.Click hereto download a free copy of his e-book, The Contrarian Handbook 8 Principles for Innovating Your Thinking. Many successful people use a failure resume and this is how it works

Many successful people use a failure resume and this is how it worksMany successful people use a failure resume and this is how it worksPeople treat rsums a lot like social media - a place to feature ones personal highlights, while glossing over the failures and bad memories. But what if we included ur failures on our rsums, too?Experts have said it can be beneficial to write a failure rsum complete with all the jobs you didnt get, awards you didnt win, and accomplishments you missed out on over the years. The idea, according to New York Times Smarter Living editor Tim Herrera, is that by taking stock of your professional failures, you can learn from your past mistakes and remind yourself that theres no straight line to success.University of Edinburgh lecturer Melanie Stefan started the trend in 2010 when she published her CV of Failuresin an article for the journal Nature. Stefan wrote that by publicizing her shortcomings, she could help other people experiencing setbacks of their own .As scientists, we construct a narrative of success that renders our setbacks invisible both to ourselves and to others, Stefan wrote. Often, other scientists careers seem to be a constant, streamlined series of triumphs. Therefore, whenever we experience an individual failure, we feel alone and dejected. On her failure-filled CV, Stefan listed prestigious universities she attended, but undercut them with leides like only Ph.D. programme I was actually admitted to and applied for four fellowships, received only one.If you dare - and can afford to - make it public, Stefan wrote. It will be six times as long as your normal CV. It will probably be utterly depressing at first sight. But it will remind you of the missing truths, some of the essential parts of what it means to be a scientist - and it might inspire a colleague to shake off a rejection and start again.Johannes Haushofer, an assistant professor of psychology and public affairs at Princeton University, displays his CV of Fa ilureson his personal websiteright under his traditional CV. Written in 2016,the documentcontains sections like Degree programs I did not get into and Research funding I did not get. Theres even a section for meta-failures that has one entry This darn CV of Failures has received way mora attention than my entire body of academic work. Most of what I try fails, but these failures are often invisible, while the successes are visible, Haushofer wrote. I have noticed that this sometimes gives others the impression that most things work out for me. As a result, they are more likely to attribute their own failures to themselves, rather than the fact that the world is stochastic, applications are crapshoots, and selection committees and referees have bad days.As the practice of keeping a failure rsum spreads, some experts are viewing it as a powerful tool for professional growth. The Stanford Technology Ventures Program, a center for entrepreneurship at Stanford University, wrote on its web site that failures increase the chance that you wont make the same mistake again and that they are a sign that you have taken on challenges that expand your skills. The site readsA failure rsum is a quick way to demonstrate that failure is an important part of our learning process, especially when youre stretching your abilities, doing things the first time, or taking risks. We hire people who have experience not just because of their successes but also because of their failures. It continued Many successful people believe that if you arent failing sometimes then you arent taking enough risks. Additionally, it is pretty clear that the ratio of our successes and failure is pretty constant. So, if you want more successes, you are going to have to tolerate more failure along the way. This article was originally posted on Business Insider.
